Internet2 (I2) established the Abilene network in February 1999. I2 contracted with Qwest to provide regional network aggregation points (gigaPoPs) across the nation. Abilene currently provides a 10 Gbps network that services more than 220 university, corporate and affiliate members.
I2 is now in the process of implementing their next generation network to replace Abilene, currently called "The New Internet 2 Network." This new network backbone will initially consist of ten 10 Gbps lambdas with the ability to grow to eighty 10 Gbps lambdas. I2 contracted with Level 3 to provide the network and gigaPoP hub facilities. As a result, the I2 technical staff has been working feverishly to migrate their network from Qwest to Level 3 to meet a planned September/October operational deadline. This migration impacts the Great Plains Network (GPN).
