Cisco Systems in May of 2004 launched a new high-end router for large telecommunications carriers, in a major bid to outmatch rivals in a key market.
The product, code-named HFR (for huge fast router), was unveiled at an event marking Cisco's 20-year anniversary, where it was christened the Carrier Routing System-1, or CRS-1.
