Got involved in a good Frame Relay case study last night and today. Involved Cisco routers and Juniper routers. Customer had to change frame relay type to IETF to get L2TP tunnels to work.

Nothing like real world, real time, real life lab work. That's called experience. When you apply for a job they want to know your education and your experience. In the Cisco certification world, the only education they care about is CCNA or no CCNA.

After they hear about your education then they want to know about experience.

How many applicants can put down real world, real time, real life CLI experience?

Well, mostly all of them once you get past the entry level positions.

But hardly any of them at the entry level positions.

So I think that would put me ahead of the crowd when I go to put in for the Network Engineer I position in Reston, Virginia.

I figure I'll start putting in for jobs in Reston beginning in January of 2009. I'm not an any big hurry to leave Atlanta right now.

Some managers came down to Atlanta from Reston, Virginia today. Got to eat some good barbecue hamburgers out on the parking deck and rub some shoulders. Might be heading up that way in the next couple of years or so. Have to see how much IP work is coming to Atlanta first.

Notes From Work

Cisco 12000 router OC3 POS interface would come up/up (looped) with 100% good ping to its own internal diagnostic loopback, however, router would not come up/up (looped) and could not ping STS3C software loopback at Sycamore 16000 on other side of fiber crossconnect in same switch site.

The odd thing was that a show controller report was reflecting back that router's information telling us that the router was in fact seeing the software loopback in the Sycamore 16000 proving the fiber crossconnect good. Why would it not come up/up (looped) and ping?

I tore down the crossconnects in the Sycamore and reconfigured the Sycamore port as an OC12 then reconfigured it back again to OC3. I then rebuilt the STS3C crossconnects in the Sycamore and the router is now testing good to the software loopback in the Sycamore. Up/up (looped) with 100% good ping !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Notes From Work

I joined a conference bridge with the customer for a hotcut of FastEthernet service. Customer needed to move from old Cisco router to new Cisco router on Sprint side to support Class of Service for customer VOIP application.

Involved at the Sprint switch site was a Transition Networks CBFTF-1014-100 media converter. After swinging the fiber crossconnect to the new Sprint router the FastEthernet port came up/up with good ping to Sprint side IP address, however, it was dropping packets to customer side IP address.

Sprint changed to half-duplex and problem cleared even though customer router remains on full duplex. Customer circuit is up and passing traffic on new router at this time.
